FX24 is a guide to how movie and video effects are made. We take the shots people remember, the dinosaurs, the bullet time, the liquid metal, and explain what was actually built, filmed and rendered to get them on screen.
What we cover
- Iconic Scene Breakdowns: famous shots taken apart, from what was on set to what was added later.
- Classic FX History: the techniques and people that built the craft, from stop-motion to the first CG characters.
- Pro FX Pipelines: how professional effects work moves between departments on a modern production.
- VFX Software Tutorials: hands-on guides to the tools, written for beginners.
- DIY Practical Effects: effects you can build at home: fog, blood, miniatures and more.
Who it is for
Film fans who want to know how a favorite scene was done, students and hobbyists who want to try the techniques themselves, and cosplayers and indie filmmakers looking for practical methods that work on a small budget.
How we research and write
Articles are built from primary and well-established sources: studio and software documentation, interviews and making-of material from the people who did the work, museum and film-archive collections, and trade publications. Each article links the sources it relies on, and every external link is checked before publishing. Where accounts disagree, we say so instead of picking the most dramatic version.
We are not paid by studios, software makers or shops to cover them, and we do not publish sponsored articles. If a product is mentioned, it is because it is the tool the technique actually uses.
Corrections
Effects history is full of half-remembered stories. If you spot a mistake, a missing credit or a broken link, tell us through the contact page and we will check it and update the article.
About the name
